Prepared and presented by Historic Vienna, Inc. (HVI)
Historic Vienna, Inc. operates two museums: The Freeman Store and Museum and The Little Library Museum. In addition to offering programming at our sites and special events in the community, we maintain virtual exhibits including our Oral History Project. We also have a number of off-site and outdoor exhibits. See below to learn about our exhibits at the Vienna Community Center, the Vienna Rexall Pharmacy store window, Lakevale Estates and inside the Freeman Store. Our goal is to share our enthusiasm for Vienna’s history with the local community as well as visitors to the area.
OFF-SITE HISTORIC VIENNA EXHIBITS
Historic Happenings at the Freeman Store
The Freeman Store and Museum, originally known as Lydecker’s Store, was built in 1859 by New Jersey merchant Abram Lydecker and his wife Susan. It was located strategically at the intersection of the busy Georgetown Road (today’s Church Street) and the Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire Railroad tracks. Lydecker’s quickly became an important gathering place and was the polling place for the surrounding area.
This exhibit describes some of the history of the Freeman Store, events that happened at the store and the transportation services that served Vienna and stopped near the store.

Vienna Past & Present – Window Exhibit at the Vienna Rexall Pharmacy
The Vienna Rexall Pharmacy, located at 150 Maple Avenue W, has graciously allowed Historic Vienna to showcase Vienna’s evolution through photographs of yesterday and today in their front window.
Since 1965, Rexall has been serving the community as a family-owned pharmacy and the store credits its nearly 60 years of success to the basic beliefs of Dr. Bob Borgatti “Be a nice guy, be helpful, try to see other people’s viewpoint and help them out whenever possible.”
This exhibit can be viewed at the Vienna Rexall Pharmacy front window located at 150 Maple Avenue W, Vienna.

Memories of Lakevale Estates – The Early Years
Lakevale Estates is a neighborhood comprised of 283 homes conveniently located close to downtown Vienna, as well as to Oakton and Reston. At the heart of Lakevale is its beautiful lake with dock where residents can enjoy fishing, kayaking and paddleboards. Lakevale is only one of two neighborhoods in Vienna with its own private pool overlooking their picturesque lake. The Lakevale Estates pool is available for use by its residents and their guests. An observation deck next to the pool allows for lovely views of the lake or a quiet spot to read a book. Their Clubhouse is a two-level structure adjacent to the pool offering a large room with fully equipped kitchen available for meetings, parties, and other gatherings. Lakevale residents love upholding community traditions during holidays throughout the year.
Historic Vienna, Inc. is grateful to the Lakevale Community for hosting this exhibit illustrating some of the history of Lakevale.
